A Rum And Lime Daiquiri is a classic cocktail that should be in everyone’s repertoire. It’s fresh tasting and light, yet packs a pretty good punch.
If you think of a bright, neon red, overly sweet, frozen slushy type cocktail when you hear ‘daiquiri’, then you’re in for a treat. This daiquiri has only three ingredients and has a sweet and sour flavor profile.
History of the Rum And Lime Daiquiri
The cocktail dates back to 1896 by an American engineer named Jennings Cox who was working in the Cuban iron mining industry.
While entertaining guests, Cox ran out of gin. Instead, he used the only other liquor he had on hand, which was rum.
He mixed the rum with lime juice, sugar, and a little mineral water. His guests loved it. When they asked Cox what the cocktail was called, he told them ‘The Daiquiri’ which was the name of the small beach town where he worked.
Roughly ten years later, an American Navy Captain, Lucius Johnson, sailed to Cuba and eventually made his way to Daiquiri. There he met Jennings Cox and was served Cox’s infamous cocktail. He loved it and brought it back to the states.
Finally, this luscious libation was a favorite of authors F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway, both of whom wrote about the drink in their novels.
You have to love a cocktail with such interesting and rich history.
Ingredients Needed
- White rum – when I can find it, I love using Plantation 3 Star Rum. It has a delicious, fruity flavor that works great in a daiquiri, but it’s not always available. Bacardi is a great alternative.
- Lime juice – use freshly squeezed lime juice. The bottled stuff is too acidic and fake tasting.
- Simple syrup – this is to taste. To make simple syrup, combine equal amounts of water and sugar. Bring to a boil until the sugar dissolves. Cool.
Steps To Make This Recipe
- Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.
- Pour in the rum, lime juice, and simple syrup.
- Shake until the outside of the shaker is very cold.
- Strain into a cocktail glass.
- Garnish with a twist of lime.
