Hot Buttered Rum

When it’s cold outside, nothing beats a steaming mug of Hot Buttered Rum.  It’s creamy, sweet, and buttery, warming and comforting you like a big hug.

This is a cocktail that makes you think about ski chalets, holiday bonfires, and sitting in front of a roaring fire while wearing fuzzy sweaters and socks.

Hot buttered rum dates way back to colonial times when colonists discovered that they could distill rum from their molasses and the hot, spiced drink would help to warm them during the harsh winters.


This cocktail is both easy to make and incredibly complicated at the same time.  The butter should be a very good quality as it offers a lot of flavor.  Honey, brown sugar and spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves are whipped into the butter.  Then the butter mixture is added to a mug with rum and hot, but not boiling water.  This gets whipped together until the butter is melted and the sugar is dissolved.


One of the best parts of this cocktail is how versatile it is.  

  • Some recipes call for using apple cider instead of water.
  • Want a creamier drink?  Vanilla ice cream, melted, can be stirred into the butter mixture.
  •  Play with the spices used.  Apple pie spice, pumpkin pie spice, or mulling spices would work well.
  • Whiskey, Cognac, or any other liquor can be used instead of rum.

1 stick butter, room temperature

½ cup dark brown sugar

¼ cup honey

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 teaspoon ground cloves

1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1 teaspoon ground allspice

1 cup spiced rum

2 cups hot water

4 cinnamon sticks


In a medium mixing bowl and using a hand mixer,  whip the butter, brown sugar honey, vanilla, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and allspice until creamy.

Spoon the butter mixture into a large 4-cup measuring cup.

Pour in the rum and boiling water.

Stir until the butter melts and the sugar is fully dissolved.

Evenly pour the mixture into 4 mugs.

Garnish with a cinnamon stick.
