WHAT IS A BLOOD ORANGE?

From the outside, a blood orange looks like any other orange…until you cut into it.  The flesh is a gorgeous maroon color.

The flavor is a cross between an orange and a raspberry.  It’s a bit more tart than other types of oranges and grows in the cooler weather – from December until May.  So, it’s a short window. Let’s drink up!

HOW DO I MAKE THIS EASY CRAFT COCKTAIL?

What could be better than a drink that takes only minutes to make?  This one is really simple. You make a flavored simple syrup. Then muddle the lime and mint into some of the syrup.  Top with the blood orange juice. Shake it together. Strain into a pretty little glass. Splash a bit of Sprite or ginger ale and enjoy.

You can make this drink even simpler by using a bottled simple syrup and bottled blood orange juice if you can find it.  These shortcuts mean you can be sipping your cocktail in less than 3 minutes. That’s faster than you could order one in a fancy bar.

Ingredients

Scale

For the simple syrup

  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ cup water
  • 4 leaves of fresh mint
  • 1 teaspoon finely grated orange zest

For the mojito

  • ½ lime
  • 5 fresh mint leaves
  • 1 ounce simple syrup
  • 2 ounces white rum
  • 1 ½ ounces blood orange juice
  • Sprite or ginger ale
  • Ice cubes

For garnish

  • Sliced oranges
  • Sliced limes
  • Mint sprigs

Instructions

Make the simple syrup.  In a small saucepan, combine the sugar and water.  Bring to a boil, stirring constantly to dissolve the sugar.   Once it comes to a boil and the sugar is fully dissolved, remove the pan from the heat.  Crush 4 mint leaves between your fingers to release their oils and put them into the simple syrup.  Sprinkle the orange zest into the syrup. Stir and allow to steep for at least 10 minutes. Strain into a covered container.  You can store this in your refrigerator for up to one week.

For the cocktail:  In a cocktail shaker, place the lime pieces and the mint leaves.  Pour in the cooled simple syrup and, using a muddler, crush the lime and mint into the liquid for about 20 seconds.

Pour in the rum and blood orange juice.  Top your shaker with a few ice cubes.

Shake the mixture until the outside of your shaker starts to feel very cold.

Strain into a low ball glass.  Top with a splash of sprite or ginger ale.

Garnish with mint and orange slices.
