There’s nothing like waking up to the delicious smell of cinnamon and apples wafting from the oven. These easy apple turnovers with caramel drizzle will tempt everyone out of bed! Using refrigerated crescent dough and store-bought caramel sauce makes this recipe a breeze.
I love apple pie, but sometimes I don’t have the ambition to make a homemade crust. And forget about those drive-thru fried apple pies – for one, I don’t want to get out of my pajamas, and two, there’s too much ‘goo’ and not enough apple. No thanks.
Apple turnovers satisfy my apple pie craving, but I hate working with puff pastry. It’s too much work when I’m craving a pie NOW. That’s where this easy apple turnover recipe comes in handy. I’m in apple turnover heaven in a little over half an hour. Add some caramel sauce as a drizzle, and they become sublime! Not only are they delicious as a breakfast treat, but served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, they’re an amazing dessert!
What Is The Difference Between Apple Pie And Apple Turnovers?
While both have a sweet, cinnamony apple filling, the shape, and the crust make each unique.
Apple pies are made in a pie plate and cut into servings. Apple turnovers are more like a single serving hand ‘pie.’
Pie uses a buttery, rolled crust, and there will be more filling than a crust, while a turnover has a flakier puff pastry crust which will be more plentiful than the filling.
Ingredients Needed
- Apples – I like the tart Granny Smith, but you could use a sweeter Macintosh, Pink Lady, or whatever baking apple you enjoy.
- Dark brown sugar – the darker sugar adds to the caramel flavors more than light brown sugar, but either will work.
- Butter – use salted butter to balance the sweetness of the apples and sugar.
- Apple pie spice and cinnamon
- Refrigerated large crescent dough
- Caramel sauce
- Flaked salt – this is optional but delicious if you enjoy a sweet/salty flavor profile.
Steps To Make This Recipe
- Core and slice the apple into 8 wedges.
- Preheat the oven and prep your baking sheet.
- Stir together the filling – butter, sugar, and spices.
- Unroll the crescent dough and separate it into triangles.
- Sprinkle each triangle with the sugar mixture.
- Lay an apple wedge at the bottom of the triangle.
- Roll the dough around the apple and sugar and place on the baking sheet.
- Brush with melted butter and bake until golden.
- When cooled, drizzle with caramel sauce and sprinkle with flaked salt.

Ingredients
1 large Granny Smith apple, washed, unpeeled, cut into eight wedges
¼ cup dark brown sugar
4 tablespoons butter, melted
1 tablespoon apple pie spice
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 tube refrigerated large crescent rolls (I used Pillsbury Grands)
1 cup + 4 teaspoons caramel sauce (I used Ghiradelli), divided
Flaked salt as a garnish, optional
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. Set aside.
Combine the brown sugar, two tablespoons of melted butter, the apple pie spice, and cinnamon until the mixture looks like wet sand.
Unroll the crescent rolls on a flat surface and separate them into eight triangles.
Sprinkle each triangle with one tablespoon of the sugar mixture and place one apple wedge at the bottom (wide side) of the triangle.
Top the apple slice with ½ teaspoon of the caramel sauce.
Carefully roll the crescent dough around the apple, taking care to keep the filling inside the dough.
Place the roll on the prepared baking sheet.
Repeat with the remaining triangles.
Brush each turnover with the remaining two tablespoons of melted butter.
Bake in the oven for 18-25 minutes or until the crescents are golden brown and the apple is tender.
Remove the pan from the oven and let the turnovers cool to room temperature.
Drizzle each turnover with two tablespoons of caramel sauce.
Very lightly sprinkle with a few flakes of salt, if desired.
Serve immediately.
