I love using coffee liqueur in a White Russian cocktail, an espresso martini, or in desserts. Okay yes, I’ll admit it. I have poured a shot of it over ice cream. It’s delicious. Don’t judge. Because this homemade coffee liqueur has only four ingredients, you want to use the best quality ingredients you can. Use really good quality coffee. This is the source of the flavor. Also, use a quality vanilla bean paste. If you are in a pinch, you could use vanilla extract, but the paste has a richer, deeper flavor.
As for the alcohol, traditionally, Kahlua is made with rum. I have made this recipe using a white rum, and it was very good. But, to reduce the sugar and carb content a little bit, I like using vodka.
