These adorable Mummy Hot Dogs With Spider Web Sauce are a great way to celebrate Halloween and feed the kids before trick or treating or starting the Halloween party at home!
I like to do a Halloween buffet for the parents and kids before heading out to trick-or-treat. The table always includes these Mummy Hot Dogs, as well as a large pot of Melted Monster Chili, The Devil’s Eggs And Spiders, Bones And Blood (or breadsticks and sauce), Peanut Butter Truffle Spider Cookies, Severed Monster Finger Cookies, bottled water or juice boxes for the kids, and Blueberry Lychee Eyeball Cocktails and Pumpkin Pie Martinis for the adults. We deserve a ‘treat’ too!
Think ‘pigs in a blanket’. You know – those little weenies wrapped in pastry that they serve at weddings or parties that nobody can get enough of.
What kid (or adult, for that matter) doesn’t love a hot dog wrapped in a crescent roll? A hot dog stuffed with cheddar cheese and wrapped in buttery, flaky crescent dough and then baked to golden perfection seems to satisfy everyone. They’re a childhood staple and always a hit. Why not take some time and make them Halloween festive by wrapping strips of dough around the hot dog so they resemble a mummy!
Yes! Puff pastry works great! Just thaw the pastry completely and increase the oven temperature to 400 degrees. Your mummies will have flakier ‘bandages’ that are very delicious.
You can also use thin pizza crust from a can. Reduce your oven temperature to 350. Before unrolling the dough, cut 20 slices. Use 2 long slices per hot dog.
I have not had success making them ahead of time. The ‘bandages’ are not clearly defined and look like vaguely lumpy dough wrapped around the hot dog. Please let me know if you have success making them ahead of time!
Place cooled leftover mummy dogs into an airtight container or zip-top bag and refrigerate for up to 3 days.
To reheat them, place on an ungreased baking sheet, cover them with foil, and bake in a 325-degree oven for 10 minutes or until hot.

For the hot dogs:
For the spider web sauce:
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees. Line a baking pan with parchment paper or a Silpat mat. Set aside.
Remove the crescent dough from the tube and unroll the dough. If you are using crescent rolls, unroll them into a sheet and press the perforations together to “seal” them.
Using a pizza cutter, cut 20 thin strips of dough.
Next, cut the 20 strips in half so that you have 40 strips of dough.
Again, using the pizza cutter, cut each slice of cheese into 4 strips. Cut the half slice in half. You should end up with 10 slices of cheese.
Line one side of each hot dog with slices of cheese.
Wrap 4 strips of dough around each hot dog and cheese slice to look like ‘mummy bandages.’ It is okay to see bits of the hot dog through the ‘bandages.’ Be sure to leave a space near the top to make a ‘face.’
Place the hot dog on the prepared baking sheet and repeat the process with the other hot dogs, cheese, and dough strips.
I like to press the wrapped strips together and slightly flattened on the back of each ‘mummy’ to hold the cheese in place as it melts while cooking.
Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 18 minutes or until the dough is golden brown and the hot dogs are hot.
Remove from the oven.
Use a smear of ketchup to attach two candy eyes to the ‘face’ of the mummy. Set aside to cool for a minute or two.
Meanwhile, make the spider web sauce.
Pour the ketchup into a small serving bowl.
Squeeze concentric circles around the top of the ketchup bowl. Use a toothpick or the tip of a knife to draw lines through the mustard circles towards the center of the bowl, creating a spider web effect.
Serve the hot dogs with the spider web ketchup for dipping.
