Sweet, salty, crispy candied bourbon bacon - bacon glazed with bourbon and coated with brown sugar. Great for brunch or as an appetizer.

No worries about serving it to the kiddos.  The alcohol in the bourbon burns off leaving just the smoky, bourbon flavor.

I like serving Candied Bourbon Bacon for brunch alongside Lemon Yogurt Pancakes; Classic French Herbed Omelets or French-Style Scrambled Eggs; Decadent Southern-Style Cheese Grits; Barbecue Bloody Marys or Fresh Peach Bellinis.

WHAT DO I NEED TO MAKE THIS RECIPE?

  • Bacon – use a leaner brand, regular cut, and not a thick cut.  If you do use a thicker cut, just bake it longer.
  • Bourbon – use a brand that you enjoy.  If you don’t want to use bourbon, you could swap orange juice, maple syrup, or even cola.
  • Light brown sugar – you could also use dark brown sugar, but it will have more of a caramelized taste.
  • Cracked black pepper – if you want more heat, use more pepper.

VARIATIONS TO THE RECIPE

  • Add flavor to the bacon by sprinkling with rosemary, thyme, or any other herb that you enjoy.
  • For heat, use a sprinkle of cayenne pepper or a slather of sriracha sauce.
  • If you’re serving the bacon as an appetizer, drizzle a bit of dark chocolate or caramel sauce over the cooked bacon and allow to harden before serving.
  • You can also sprinkle chopped nuts over the cooked bacon before the sugar cools, so the nuts stick.

CANDIED BOURBON BACON

Description

This candied bourbon bacon makes a delicious, crispy, crunchy addition to your breakfast table, but it is also a great appetizer to go along with cocktails in the evening.

Ingredients

Scale

12 strips bacon (regular thickness)

3 tablespoons bourbon

⅓ cup light brown sugar

½ teaspoon cracked black pepper

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.  Line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil and a place wire rack over the baking sheet.

Arrange the bacon strips on the rack, making sure that the strips don’t overlap and there is some space between the strips.

Use a silicone pastry brush to liberally slather the bourbon on both sides of the bacon.

Sprinkle each slice of bacon with 1 heaping teaspoon of the brown sugar and spread out all over each strip.

Sprinkle the strips lightly with the black pepper.

Bake the bacon in the preheated oven until the sugar is melted and the strips are a deep golden brown in color – 18-25 minutes.  Check the bacon often towards the end of cooking because it will burn quickly.

Remove the pan from the oven and allow it to cool on the rack.  It will crisp as it cools.

When cool enough to handle, serve, and eat while warm.
