Baked Maple Glazed Donuts

Description

Treat your family to a delicious Autumn breakfast with Baked Maple Glazed Donuts.  Made with a boxed cake mix, these spiced donuts are easy to make and topped with a rich, buttery maple glaze.

Ingredients

Scale

For the donuts:

  • 1 (15.25-ounce) box cake mix (I used Duncan Hines Butter Golden Cake Mix)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ⅛ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil
  • ¾ cup buttermilk

For the maple glaze:

  • 3 tablespoons salted butter, melted
  • 2 teaspoons maple extract
  • ¼ cup pure maple syrup (not pancake syrup)
  • 1 ½ cups powdered sugar (more if needed)
  • 12 tablespoons heavy cream (more if needed)

Instructions

Make the donuts:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.  Spray a donut pan with non-stick cooking spray and set aside.

In a large bowl, whisk together the cake mix, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, eggs, vegetable oil, and buttermilk until well combined.

Spoon the batter into a large zip-top plastic bag.

Snip off one small corner of the bag to use as a piping bag.

Carefully squeeze the batter into the prepared donut pan until they are about half full.  Tap the pan on the counter to flatten the batter in the pan.

Bake in the preheated oven for 12-14 minutes or until golden on the top and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Allow the donuts to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before removing the donuts to cool completely on a wire rack.

Meanwhile, make the maple glaze:

In a small, microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter in the microwave.

Pour in the maple syrup and extract and whisk until fully combined.

Whisk in the powdered sugar and 1 tablespoon of the heavy cream until thick and smooth.

If desired, whisk in the remaining tablespoon of cream.  The glaze should be thick.

Once the donuts are cooked, carefully dip the top half into the glaze.  Place the donut back onto the wire rack and allow the glaze to set.  You may need to stir the glaze in between dipping the donuts if it gets too thick.
